The study looked at the increased risks of birth defects associated with in vitro fertilization. This is an important article indicating that the sperm from infertile men, even when used for in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI), can result in higher rates of birth defects.  This reinforces the need for every man to visit a Male Infertility expert for proper evaluation, counseling and treatment prior to pursuing IVF-ICSI.  In many cases a correctable problem such as Varicocele can be identified, which allows for a natural conception and therefore decreased chances of birth defects.

The reason that Male Infertility is not well known is due to the fact that most men are not willing to discuss the issue.  Male fertility requires the production of mature sperm, with good mobility that can fertilize the egg.  At first glance, female fertility may seem more complicated. Male fertility has several conditional requirements, which include: the ability to have and sustain an erection, having enough sperm, having enough semen fluid to carry the sperm to the egg, and having sperm of the right shape (morphology) that move in the right way.  Any issue with meeting any of these conditions contributes to infertility.

There are several factors that contribute to male infertility: physical, hormonal, or environmental. From a medical perspective, low sperm count, misshapen sperm, or sperm that is immobile, can cause infertility. Factors that affect fertility include, but are not limited to:

  • Age
  • Exposing the testes to high temperatures, which  can affect the ability of the sperm to move and to fertilize an egg.  For instance:
    • Cryptorchism is a condition where the testes do not descend into the scrotum.  Although it does not usually affect the ability to have and sustain an erection, cryptorchism means that the testes are still inside the body cavity, which has a higher temperature than the external scrotum.
    • Excessive use of sauna or hot tub, i.e., more than 15 minutes daily.
  • Excessive smoking, drugs, and alcohol
  • Some prescription
  • Environmental toxins, although occupational cause is rare
  • Genetic conditions, such as Klinefelter syndrome
  • Other health problems

The 2012 baseball season has officially begun.  Every team is starting out fresh with the same record (0-0).  The Texas Rangers’ official first pitch is tomorrow at 1pm against the Chicago White Sox. The weather forecast is a beautiful, sunny, 80o day.  It appears everyone is as excited, as I am, since the game is sold out. Colby Lewis will be on the mound for the Rangers, and I trust he will continue where he left off in the playoffs.  Hopefully, our 2011 American League Champions will bring a World Serious championship back to the Great State of Texas.  So, join me as we root for the Rangers, and begin our journey to total domination of the American League West.  Go Rangers!

In our new series, we would like to look at some of these diseases and their causes and effects. First in the series is Parkinson’s disease, a disease that knows no gender limits. Parkinson’s disease affects the nervous system.  This disorder is results from the loss of dopamine producing brain cells.  Unfortunately, any loss of brain cells is not good because of their inability to regenerate.  “The median age of onset is about age 65. Parkinson’s disease in someone under the age of 60 is considered to be early-onset Parkinson’s disease. But it’s much rarer in younger people. In individuals under 50 years of age, the incidence is 50 per 100,000, and for people under 40 years of age, the incidence is less than 5 per 100,000.” (NBC Chicago – News) Some symptoms of Parkinson disease are: trembling in the hands, arms, legs, and jaw.  People suffering from Parkinson’s disease move slowly and have impaired coordination.  There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, but there are a few medications available to treat the disease.  Over time, the disease gradually gets worse. Rangers win American League

A little over three months ago, the Texas Rangers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. No, I am not going to open up that wound. What I am going to point out is, with the movement of time, new hope abounds. This past Wednesday, Pitchers and Catchers reported to spring training. Spring Training, the time that all the teams start out even. We get to begin dreaming and slowly build excitement to Opening Day. New Players have joined the Rangers, such as Yu Darvish from Japan. Others look to improve on last season’s success, and hopefully, see several players begin their move to glory. Youthful, amazing players, like Derek Holland and Elvis Andrus and perennial superstars, Michael Young and Josh Hamilton are among them. This season holds much hope and promise. Two consecutive American League Championships. Third time is a charm. Let’s GO Rangers!!
