Super Bowl XLVI – Our Prediction

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Patriots vs. Giants

Once again, the class is in session.  The professor Tom Brady along with the New England Patriots are ready to take the New York Giants to school!
This will go down as one of the best Super Bowl rematches in NFL history.  Victory will come in a different manner in Indiana.  I know that the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots four years ago in Super Bowl XLII but that will not happen this year because the Patriots are not under the same amount of pressure they were back then.
The Patriots are coming off a stellar post-season performance.  Just look how they breezed passed the Baltimore Ravens. The Giants are incapable of beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl because the Pats are unstoppable.  Like I said before Eli Manning is good but Tom Brady is better.   All of the skeptics, who feel that Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are overrated, will definitely be silenced once and for all this Sunday.  We have two days until this historic showdown.  The New England Patriots will
be the 2012 Super Bowl Champions.

Go Patriots!

InVitro Fertilization and Newt Gingrich’s Comment

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Monday, Republican Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich called for a commission to study ethical issues that relate to in vitro fertilization clinics. However, these clinics are already regulated by medical ethics groups, www.asrm.org. These clinics are frequented by women that have infertility issues. Women can go to these clinics to receive treatments to help them get pregnant. To serve their clients, in vitro clinics create large numbers of embryos for fertilization. Gingrich stated, “If you have in vitro fertilization you are creating life. And therefore we should look seriously at what should the rules be for clinics that do that because they’re creating life.”  According to eMedicineHealth.com, “With IVF, a method of assisted reproduction, a man’s sperm and the woman’s egg are combined in a laboratory dish, where fertilization occurs. The resulting embryo is then transferred to the woman’s uterus (womb) to implant and develop naturally.” Usually, only two embryos are placed in the woman’s uterus at one time. Occasionally, 3 or 4 may be used in women with lower IVF success potential.  Each attempt is called a cycle. The term test tube baby is often used to refer to children conceived with this technique, although it really occurs in a Petri dish.

There are some women who want to become pregnant because their spouse or boyfriend is infertile as a result of a vasectomy. In this case, the more natural and cost-effective solution is a vasectomy reversal. This procedure is routine in the hands of an experienced micro-surgeon,  and has a high success rate without any further ramifications. Unlike in vitro fertilization there are no ethical issues surrounding vasectomy reversals.  If you are considering vasectomy reversal, please contact a qualified male infertility micro-surgeon and vasectomy reversal specialist.

Does Sleep Apnea Affect Male Fertility?

Friday, January 27th, 2012

As we continue to look into issues of men’s health, a common disorder is Sleep Apnea.  Sleep Apnea occurs when breathing is interrupted during sleep and if left untreated, a person can stop breathing hundreds of times during the night. Sleep Apnea has
also been implicated as a causative factor in cases of low testosterone level. (http://www.vasectomyreversal.com/blog/?p=187)  Sleep Apnea can be extremely dangerous because the brain and the rest of the body may not be receiving enough oxygen.  There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive and central.  Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a blockage of the airway by the tissue in the back of the throat collapsing.  In the case of central sleep apnea, the airway is not blocked and is a result of non-respiratory control.  As simple as sleep apnea may sound it can be fatal. If you feel that you have sleep apnea, please see your physician and have a sleep study performed. Sleep Apnea and fatigue go hand in hand. Fatigue does not directly affect sperm count in male infertility; however,  it does have an impact in sexual stamina and performance. Plenty of rest will increase your stamina, thus increasing your overall chances of successful fertility. If you are experiencing symptoms of sleep apnea, sexual dysfunction or male infertility, please consult a qualified specialist.

Male Infertility…and Vasectomy Reversal

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Male infertility is a problem that many men face.  Not being able to conceive a child can be emotionally devastating.  Infertility can be caused by several things, such as low sperm count, poorly shaped or immobile sperm, illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, and severe lifestyle issues, such as chronic hot tub or sauna use. Studies show that a man’s sperm count gradually declines after the age of 40.  Also, approximately 15 percent of couples are infertile and male infertility plays a role in up to 50%
of cases.

Some men who previously fathered children have chosen to prevent further pregnancies.  This procedure is called a vasectomy,
or male sterilization. Several men who have undergone this procedure may change their minds.  They may have lost a child
and want to conceive another.  They may have had children in a previous marriage, and their new spouse may want to
conceive children of their own.  Matter of fact, remarriage is one of the top reasons that men have vasectomy
reversals. Years ago, this would have been almost impossible because a vasectomy was considered to be a permanent procedure.  However, excellent results can occur from the vasectomy reversal, which restores a man’s fertility.  During microsurgical vasectomy reversal, the tubes that carry the sperm from the testicles into the semen are reconnected.  Vasectomy reversals have a high success rate when performed by a Fellowship-trained Male Infertility Specialist and Microsurgeon! If you have any questions regarding either male infertility or vasectomy reversal, contact a qualified specialist.

Is it Tebow Time? Not!

Friday, January 13th, 2012

All I hear is “How about Tebow?” or “What will Tebow do next?”  Well, I will tell you what time it is “It’s Brady time!”  There are some people who really believe that Tim Tebow and the Broncos are capable  of defeating Tom Brady and the Patriots in the playoff game this weekend. This is something that is not going to happen this year. Not only does Tom Brady have Playoff experience and discipline to boot, but he has the Super Bowl Rings to prove it.  The Patriots are the highest scoring
team in the AFC. Has everyone forgotten the last time these two teams met? Pats won 41-23 with 451 total yards. Vince Lombardi once said that “the strength of the group is the strength of the leaders.” Tom Brady is definitely a leader! He has a 14-5 record in the playoffs.  Again “It’s Brady Time!”  Go Patriots!

High Blood Pressure and the Effects on Male Fertility

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012
Have your blood pressure checked regularly

Have you had your blood pressure checked?

You probably know someone or at least have heard of someone diagnosed with High Blood Pressure. High blood pressure (Hypertension) is a disease that is also known as the “silent killer” because people have it for years and do not even know it.  By the time people realize what is wrong it can be too late.  Many people think that emotional stress is the sole contributor for hypertension but to the contrary.  The foods we eat can be a contributing factor. Normal blood pressure is 120/80, 139/89 is
borderline, and a reading of 140/90 is considered high and can lead to stroke, heart failure, kidney failure, or aneurysm.
High blood pressure is more prevalent in men than women.  According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey, only 44% of men who have high blood pressure get treated for it while 61% of women get treated.  What does Hypertension have to do with male fertility or sexual function?  High blood pressure has been noted to cause some cases of Erectile Dysfunction (ED). High blood pressure is something that should be taken very seriously.  Getting your blood pressure checked is as simple as putting on your shoes.  If you have any further concerns about high blood pressure, I suggest you contact your nearest Primary Care Physician.

Erectile Dyfunction – A Concern for Men

Friday, January 6th, 2012

As men, we shudder at the thought of any comment that directly brings our manhood into question. Sometimes a problem occurs that can only be labeled as Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Erectile Dysfunction is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection
suitable for sexual intercourse. This is a subject most men don’t like thinking about, let alone discussing it. It is a subject that should not be taken lightly. There are several things that can cause ED, such as poor blood flow to the penis, constant fatigue, and medications, to mention a few.  According to Web MD, Erectile Dysfunction affects an estimated 18 million men in the U.S. alone.  Although, this can have a devastating mental effect on men, there are ways to treat this condition.  For example, Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis are just a few of the medications used to treat ED. Low testosterone level is also a common, associated factor and it is easy to treat. If you are experiencing Erectile Dysfunction, I suggest you contact a physician who specializes in this field.

Why Vasectomy Reversal?

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Why, if a man has had a vasectomy, would he want to reverse it?  Surprisingly, according to the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine, approximately 500,000 men have vasectomies each year. It also acknowledges the fact that, at least 5% of those men will change their minds for reasons such as, remarriage, death of a child, or an improved lifestyle that sometimes create a want for more children.  Under these circumstances, men would be required to undergo a Vasovasostomy also known as vasectomy reversal.  The surgery has a 99 percent success rate, in the hands of a skilled and Fellowship-trained Vasectomy Reversal Micro Surgeon, like Dr. Buch.  Although vasectomy reversal is seldom covered by insurance companies, it is more affordable than you may think.  There are several payment options available to you through medical financing.  For instance, you could have a vasectomy reversal for as little as $500 down and $217.62 a month (OAC).  If you have any further questions or concerns regarding vasectomy reversal, consult your physician.

Testicular Cancer – A Topic for Thought

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

When thinking about the topic of common cancers affecting men, colon and prostate come to mind. There is another form of cancer that is hardly ever discussed, testicular cancer. Most men don’t realize that the testicles can be affected by cancer. Some men may even be embarrassed to discuss the topic. There is no need for men to be silent on this issue, because the more educated we become on testicular cancer, the more we can improve our way of living. Some of the symptoms are, but not limited to, swelling and pain in the testicles. If you feel aches and pains in your abdomen or scrotum, don’t mistake it for a hernia; you may be experiencing early symptoms of testicular cancer. Although testicular cancer is rare, yet like other forms of cancer, early detection and treatment can increase a person’s survival rate. If you have questions about your health, please consult your physician.

What are the Factors Predicting Successful Microsurgical Vasectomy Reversal?

Friday, August 12th, 2011

predicting successful microsurgical vasectomy reversalVasectomy reversal is possible and, in fact, is the choice many couples make upon deciding to try for a child. Results, however, can vary.  While success rates for return of sperm typically range from 75 percent to 86 percent, pregnancy rates are lower, ranging from 45 percent to 70 percent percent. However, the success rates and pregnancy rates are even higher when enlisting the services of a vasectomy reversal expert.

There are several factors that determine a man’s chances of successful reversal; by paying attention to these factors, you can reasonably predict the outcome.

  • Length of time since the vasectomy:  Typically, the sooner a reversal is initiated, the better. As time passes, the chances of restored fertility do not suddenly drop, as was previously thought. They do, however, follow a downward trend.  That said, many men have had successful reversals despite a time lapse as long as 20 years after the initial surgery.

  • Prior fertility:  Having fathered a child before the vasectomy increases your chances of being able to father a new child after a reversal.

  • Prior vasectomy reversal:   If a prior reversal has failed, that does not mean that you cannot have a successful reversal.  In fact, one study demonstrated that as many as 79 percent of men whose first reversal failed had successful outcomes after another reversal performed by a microsurgical vasectomy reversal specialist.

  • Other surgeries:  Some surgeries, such as pediatric hernia repair, may cause a secondary vasal obstruction.  This can reduce the chances for success.

  • Partner:  Age of the partner has an impact, since women’s fertility declines with age especially after age 40.  However excellent pregnancy rates are achieved when the female partner has normal fertility.

An experienced vasectomy reversal doctor can help you determine whether you are a viable candidate for reversal surgery.  However, there are some factors that he will not be aware of until he begins the procedure, such as a secondary blockage in the epididymis.   Another factor on which the success of the reversal depends is the quality of the surgeon.  There are vast differences between the least qualified, typically General Urologists, all the way to the most qualified fertility fellowship-trained, micro-surgeons.

Dedicated to providing quality care and able to show proven results, Legacy Male Health Institute and Dr. Jeffrey Buch are recognized leaders in the field of vasectomy reversal amongst fertility fellowship trained micro-surgeons.  Dr. Buch and his team combine state of the art technology and medical expertise, with truly client-focused care.
